Broken Knee

Today marks exactly 3 months since I shattered my kneecap from a stumble back in London on my way to Sweden. Remarkably I still made my train and flight to Stockholm with a busted leg. I spent my first few days in a Swedish ER where I was told I would need surgery. Thanks to my lovely friends (who I haven’t seen in TEN years) I was still able to see some of Stockholm in a wheelchair and hobbling around on crutches- no small feat on cobblestones and relying on public transport.

Didn’t think I’d be reuniting with my two best friends from undergrad in an emergency room.

Because of my need for immediate surgery, I had to cut my post-Sweden time in NYC with family short and head back to SD. After several more meetings with various doctors and orthopedists and sorting out some issues with insurance, I was finally able to receive surgery in San Diego 2 weeks later where they drilled 3 screws in my patella.

Recovery has been agonizingly sloooow. My first 8 weeks out of surgery my mom flew into town to help me out while I was on crutches. I’m now able to drive and walk in a brace while I attend weekly physical therapy to regain flexibility in my knee. Frustratingly, I’ve made almost no progress the past 11 weeks, so as a last resort I’ll be fitted with a “dynamic brace” that will force my knee to bend.

It’s been a long and painful process, but I’ve been fortunate to have lots of help through my recovery. I’m also happy to be mobile enough to still attend Comic Con this week where I’ll be able to see friends flying in from out of town. Yay distractions.

More updates to come.
